National Fire Prevention Week is near, and here at Paul Davis Restoration of Oakland County we thought this would be a good time to remind our community about safety measures that can be taken to help prevent fires in the home.
The primary cause of house fires is cooking. Don’t leave items to cook on the stove while unattended, as hot oil, grease, or forgotten food can flare up in just a short time. When cooking, loose sleeves and other clothing can readily catch fire if they contact a hot cooking surface. Flammable kitchen towels and pot holders should be kept away from your stove or oven when they’re not in use. An ABC-rated fire extinguisher should be readily accessible in your kitchen.
If a fire occurs anywhere in the home, smoke detectors can be lifesavers and can help prevent extensive property damage as well. The National Fire Prevention Association claims that 60% of residential fire fatalities occur in homes with either missing or non-working smoke detectors, according to a 2014 report. Dead, missing, or disconnected batteries are the main culprit for smoke detectors that don’t work when they should, according to the NPFA. Today is the perfect time to check all of your smoke detectors to make sure that they work.
The safety of the Clinton Township community is our biggest priority. In our work, we clean up and repair property damage from fire and smoke with the goal of getting homes and businesses back to normal as soon as possible.
